International jury awards Brigitte Kowanz’s work for the 13th Cairo Biennale

The internationally renowned artist Brigitte Kowanz has been honoured for her installation “United in Diversity” for the 13th Cairo Biennale with the “Biennale Prize 2019”.

The internationally renowned jury, consisting of Catherine David, deputy director, Musée national d’art moderne (MNAM) – Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, Teresa Grandas, curator, MACBA Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona, Amelia Jones, professor, University of Southern California), Anabelle Ténèze, director, Abattoirs-FRAC Midi-Pyrénée, Toulouse and Felicitas Thun-Hohenstein, professor, academy of fine arts vienna, awarded Brigitte Kowanz, whose contribution breaks up boundaries between virtual and real space and reflects on the opportunities, but also the dangers of new technology and social media.

Brigitte Kowanz, whose work was shown in 2017 in the Austrian Pavilion at the 57th International Art Exhibition La Biennale Di Venezia, received the prize personally at the Cairo opera house.

The 13th Cairo Biennale takes place for the first time after the outbreak of the Arab Spring in 2010/2011. At the same time, this exhibition participation fills the last blind spot on the comprehensive exhibition list of the internationally renowned Viennese concept artist (*1957), who has now been represented in serveral institutional exhibitions on all continents.

A belief in new technology, a reflection of its impacts on contemporary society, its opportunities but also its dangers is at the centre of Brigitte Kowanz’ installation for the 13th Cairo Biennale. Light is not only the foundation of life, it is also the basis of post-analogue communication.
