On the initiative of Felicitas Thun-Hohenstein (Art historian and professor at the Institute for Art and Cultural Studies at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna) and Morten Solvik (Musicologist, Vice President of the Mahler Foundation), the Mahler Forum for Music and Society was established recently.
In keeping with the spirit of the great composer Gustav Mahler, in whose masterful works we encounter people who confront the great questions of existence, the Mahler Forum will create an interdisciplinary platform with annual events in Carinthia.
The first event will be a two-day program with a top-class cast from the fields of music, art and science.
On July 3 and 4, 2021, the Mahler Forum invites you to the Künstlerhaus Klagenfurt and the following day to the Gustav Mahler Composer’s House Maiernigg.
The star baritone Thomas Hampson will present works by Mahler, Schubert, Messiaen and other composers in an intergenerational exchange with Susan Zarrabi (Mezzosopran), Jeeyoung Lim (Bariton), John Warner and student singers and members of the Orchestra for the Earth, London.
This will be preceded by a roundtable discussion with Thomas Hampson (singer, musical advisor of the Mahler Forum), Andreas Weber (philosopher & author), Elisabeth von Samsonow (philosopher and artist, Academy of Fine Arts Vienna) and Ulrike Sych (rector of the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna, singer). Tanja Traxler (physicist/philosopher & journalist) and Morten Solvik (musicologist, director of the Institute for European Studies, Vienna) will present.
On July 4, a matinee in and around Mahler’s Composing Hut in Maiernigg will feature a musical performance by the Orchestra for the Earth, a reading by Alexander Widner, and the artistic intervention — I, Nature by Nataša Sienčnik, which Felicitas Thun-Hohenstein will introduce.
