Light is playing with shadow, colours are telling a story

We are delighted to announce that István Haász, one of the most prominent artists of the Hungarian geometric constructivism, will present his first solo show at Ani Molnár Gallery.

István Haász’s works examine the relation of surfaces to each other and their effect on space. Meanwhile he calls forth the possibilities hidden in the playfulness of light and shadow, and the storytelling power of colours. His works are closely linked to the traditions of constructivist painting, yet his methods of creation reveal new ways, which are far from the conventional.

With his coherent visual construction and meticulous pick of painterly tools, Haász raises questions of geometry. This way his relief-like objects step out from the even, into the three dimensional. He imbues his works with dynamic attributes, which nest the probability to shift from the surface and beyond. His monochrome colour-stories strengthen our attention of the perception of light and space. Yellow as the colour of free associations and black as the opposite of light appear on his latest works.

The rhythmic structures and the exceptional peacefulness that occur on his pictures suggests the sensation of stability. As a result of the display and the condensation of dynamic space changing, pulsing and intensive elements of forms emerge, in case of a closer inspection. The geometric shapes that are layered on top of each other, not only react with one an other but with the whole artwork.

István Haász (1946) was born in Gönc, Hungary, lives and works in Budapest. He studied at the Teachers’ Training College of Eger and at the Collage of Fine Arts in Hungary. Many of his works were shown at solo and group exhibitions, both locally and internationally. In 2012 he received the DAAD scholarship in Worpswede, and in 1996 he was awarded with the Pollock – Krasner Foundation’s Scholarship in New York. In 2002 he received the Munkácsy Award, and in 2010 the Hungarian Republic’s Notable Artist Award, which are the most prestigious art prizes in Hungary. In 2014 and 2015 he was invited to participate at the Artist-in-Residence Krems residency as a guest artist. Since 2006 he is a member of OSAS (Open Structures Art Society), and from 2009 he is a full member of the Széchenyi Academy of Letters and Arts. His works can be found in several museums and private collections in Europe.
