The government has earmarked an additional 106 million forints (EUR 338,000) to support the completion of the revamp of the Subotica (Szabadka) synagogue, Europe’s second largest, in Vojvodina, according to a decree published in the official gazette Magyar Kozlony.
Under the decree published in the gazette’s Tuesday issue, an amount of 49 million forints has been earmarked in support in Hungary’s central budget for this year and another 57 million forints for 2018.
The 115-year-old synagogue, a Hungarian Art Nouveau masterpiece, was designed by Budapest’s Marcell Komor and Dezso Jakab and was completed with stained glass windows by Miksa Roth.
The Hungarian prime minister pledged 100 million forints in government support for the refurbishment during his visit to Subotica in March 2014. The funding was increased later to total 730 million forints, an official of the Hungarian National Council in Subotica told MTI on Wednesday.
The synagogue is expected to be officially reopened next spring.
